An Apron for Jessica

Sometimes, projects sit around for a while. Either lack of all the necessary pieces, lack of inspiration, or being just plain busy. I wanted to make my older sister an apron for ages. She, however, couldn’t decide on colors, and I couldn’t decide on a pattern, so in May of 2010 I asked my mom to crochet some lace for an apron for Jessica. I foolishly believed that her motivation would inspire me. Ha! Finally in January of 2011 I finished it. In less than two hours. Tsk Tsk. I’m a crafty slacker is what I am.

As aprons go, this one is custom and full coverage. Many apron patterns I see, do not actually cover an ample bosom. Or even a small bosom. Grease doesn’t just splatter below the waist!

So in a fit of creative fortitude, I grabbed a yard, folded it in half RST, and drew a shape that looked as curvy as my lovely sister Jessica. The fabric is wonderful, full of many bright colors, and I lined it with a creamy yellow. I even put on some fun handmade tags I purchased from Etsy.

I don’t crochet. I made one wash rag, once, out of boredom. It didn’t go well. So I wasn’t quite sure how to utilize the wonderful handmade crocheted lace on the apron. The lace came in four finished pieces, none the same length. I used half (and plan to use the other half for an apron for my other older sister – shhhh, don’t tell her.) and just kinda, mimicked the round of the very full apron skirt.

I apologize for the recently woken up, still shower-wet hair dreary photos. January doesn’t offer much light in the Pacific Northwest.

My favorite part is the skirt fabric alignment, showing off the tree. She is quite the gardener, and will appreciate the nature motif. Here is a bit of the pocket detail with my crafty mom’s lace! She is so talented!

Right now, I am thinking I might need a new apron too! I am reading this somewhat funny, easy recipe book “How to make love and dinner at the same time” – a cookbook for using the slow-cooker that, like this apron, has been sitting around for ages. Most of the recipes involve canned ingredients, not fresh, and it’s not necessarily focused on healthy eating choices, so I am unsure how great it is. But I’ll let you know. I plan on trying stuffed green peppers soon, in a slow-cooker, crazy stuff!

I hope you guys are finding these cold, dark days of January inspiring and motivational. I suggest finding a project that has been sitting around awhile, and just finish it up right away. Be done with it, and move on to something a bit more exciting!

Love,

MaLora

Cheery Cherry Apron

Whipped up a sweet 1950′s apron for a bachelorette party this week at Row House Cafe in South Lake Union. The food was fantastic and the bride-to-be was too!

Tie One On – circus aprons revealed

Somehow,  I was lucky enough to make it to Tie One On’s Circus Apron post today! I feel too excited to sit down, and must dash off to get a cup of coffee to calm myself down. I’ve read her posts and envied her sewing skills for such a long time, it feels neat-o to participate in her apron contests. If you sew, I suggest you participate! Next theme is Apple Cider… delicious for this fall!

See the rest here and check out the one below from Amber Sambry – an absolute favorite!

Amber Sambry's apron of awesome!

Now, for a bowl of cereal and a huge cup of coffee.

Best,

UPDATE Monday, September 13:

Kimberly of Bambino Steps whipped up this cute little number- note the little bird on the elephant!

Will you be joining in on the cider and apples fiasco of fun apronry?

Circus Apron in Cherry and Aqua - designs
Act 1. Designing! Dreaming! Doing!

I sketched a few ideas, and realized I didn’t have tulle, sequins, buttons in red, buttons in aqua, feathers, or striped fabric. I had to use fabric from my stash, and luckily, I had a couple spare yards in aqua and cherry red. Hmmm….

Act 2. Making the Man’s Apron

The man’s apron, or “mapron” I made very easily and simply. The premium protection is essential for the practicing chef, and aligning the stripes perfectly helped keep the double layers thick and vibrant in color.

Act 3. Building a Structure

Deciding on a design and pattern layout was fun. I built the apron step by step, cutting each layer as I went. First the base, then the triangles, then the waist band. As I cut out, I finished the edges and basted down each piece. I cut the ties from the remaining fabric pieces, and nearly ran out of fabric! I spent a great deal of time aligning the polka dots in both the front of the apron and each side of the waist band. I like to polka (dot)!

Act 4. Gathering feminine frills

Gathering the hip frills and thrills was what really excited me. A subtle feminine swagger. With wild abandon, I didn’t measure at all. (OMG – no measuring!!!)

Act 5. The temperament of ties

The ties, due to using up all my fabric, became a combination of the two fabrics. They are extra long, and when put into a bow the white fabric ends inside the knot, so just the aqua fabric shows. See the sparkles on the wall?

Act 6. Accessorizing your apron

Using insul-bright, I made super puffy pot holders. I love them, and am thinking they will make lovely presents for family during the holidays this winter. Who doesn’t love super puffy, colorful handmade gifts?

Act 7. Tea Time

Nothing like a deadline to motivate me! I had to finish this by today, during the three-day weekend, and spent most of yesterday sewing and cutting and ironing and stitching and stitching and stitching. Now for a nice cup of tea!

A special thank you to Amy of Angry Chicken and her “Tie One On” series. You can see her flickr collection and all the crafty apronistas! There is truly nothing like a deadline and a project to keep me going. Sometimes my day-job of being an event planner drives me crazy with the amount of work it takes during the last few months/weeks/days/hours before the event happens… and sometimes when showtime is there, and all the work is done, and I just get to breathe… I will relax behind the scenes. I get to have a cup of tea, laugh with my friends, and enjoy the moment when the event is over and I am done. For now, tonight, I’m going to finish my tea, and relish in a deadline met, a project completed, mistakes made and new things learned.

Best,

MaLora

PS: I am giddy to see what everyone else made. The circus theme is really fun… I had dreams of a corset fit and tulle but I am on a fabric diet until my stash is a bit thinner (I’m sure you can relate!) But do tell, What is your favorite circus? I really loved “The Show to End All Shows” from Circus Contraption in Seattle last year. So fantastic!
